The Echo of Cinema Returns, MIFFest 2026 Unveils “Resonance” and a Dynamic New Ambassador Line-Up for Its 9th Edition!

KUALA LUMPUR, 2026 – The Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) has officially unveiled key highlights for its highly anticipated 9th edition, which is set to take place from 18 to 25 July 2026 in Kuala Lumpur. The announcement was made during a press conference held at PARKROYAL COLLECTION Kuala Lumpur, the festival’s official hotel partner.

Marking a vibrant return to its annual celebration of cinema, MIFFest 2026 will once again open at MyTOWN Shopping Centre in collaboration with GSC International Screens as the official cinema partner. Backed by its strategic partner, the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), MIFFest continues to reinforce its position as one of the region’s most important platforms for cinematic exchange and cultural dialogue.

This year, MIFFest introduces the theme “Resonance”, a concept that reflects how cinema continues to echo in hearts and minds long after the credits roll. Envisioned by MIFFest Founder and President Joanne Goh, the theme highlights the enduring emotional and social power of storytelling in a world increasingly shaped by environmental challenges, social fractures, and widening inequality.

According to Joanne Goh, films are not merely meant to entertain or inform, but to leave behind meaning, urgency, and truth that continue to ripple through conversations, memory, and society. As she shared during the press conference, “Films do not end when the screen fades to black, they echo in conversations, in memory, and in the quiet hope of those seeking dignity and truth. At MIFFest, these echoes converge, amplifying the courage of storytellers and the urgency of their voices.”

Anchored in the colour purple, symbolising depth, introspection, and transformation, MIFFest 2026’s key visual features flowing waves shaped by light and lens reflections, representing the reverberations of cinema and its subtle yet lasting impact on society.

One of the major highlights announced at the press conference was the reveal of the MIFFest 2026 ambassador line-up, which reflects a compelling mix of established and emerging creative voices in Malaysia. Joining the festival this year are Jack Tan and Zizan Razak, while Daiyan Trisha returns for her second year as ambassador. Meanwhile, Bront Palarae continues his longstanding association with MIFFest, marking his seventh consecutive year with the festival. Together, this cross-generational line-up embodies the evolving spirit of Malaysian cinema while bridging artistry, industry, and audiences.

Another major initiative making its return is ASEAN On Screen, which will be held for the second time at MIFFest 2026 following its successful debut. First launched in 2025 alongside Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship, the programme continues to celebrate Southeast Asian storytelling while encouraging stronger regional collaboration. Through curated screenings, industry forums, and networking sessions, ASEAN On Screen offers a valuable platform for filmmakers, industry professionals, and cultural partners to connect and exchange ideas on collaboration, identity, and the future of regional storytelling.

At the press conference, FINAS CEO Dato’ Azmir Saifuddin Bin Mutalib highlighted that MIFFest has evolved into a strategic cultural platform connecting Malaysia to regional and international film networks. He also noted that initiatives such as ASEAN On Screen are helping to drive greater visibility, collaboration, and growth within the Asian film ecosystem.

Building on this momentum, MIFFest also announced a new collaboration with the Asian World Film Festival (AWFF 2026). As part of this partnership, AWFF will introduce a dedicated segment titled “Focus on ASEAN Countries, Presented by MIFFest”. Selected ASEAN films curated under ASEAN On Screen will travel to AWFF, allowing Southeast Asian stories to reach broader international audiences while creating new opportunities for filmmakers to engage with the global industry.

In another exciting move, MIFFest revealed a new partnership with Kampong Film Lab, an initiative by the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF), which is dedicated to supporting emerging filmmakers through mentorship, training, and hands-on project development. Through this collaboration, MIFFest will introduce an AI-focused programme for emerging filmmakers, which will take place across both MIFFest and JAFF platforms. The programme aims to explore the evolving role of artificial intelligence in filmmaking while nurturing fresh creative approaches and strengthening regional talent development.

The festival is also expanding its international programming through a new collaboration with ROSKINO and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation to present Russian Film Week at MIFFest 2026. The special programme will feature five contemporary Russian films from 2025 to 2026, each screened once during the festival with English subtitles and offered free of charge. This initiative is set to give Malaysian audiences a rare opportunity to experience Russia’s contemporary cinematic landscape while deepening cultural exchange and industry ties between both countries.

In addition, MIFFest continues to strengthen its long-standing collaboration with the High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur (HCIKL) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of India, reaffirming the festival’s role as a key platform for showcasing Indian cinema in Malaysia and for creating opportunities for cross-cultural storytelling between the two nations.

On the partnership front, Hong Leong Bank returns for its second year as MIFFest’s Official Bank as part of a three-year collaboration aimed at championing film culture, empowering creative communities, and broadening access to the arts. Joining the line-up this year is Foodpanda as the Official Food Delivery Partner. MIFFest 2026 also welcomes Mah Sing Group as Festival Sponsor and Trident Global Holdings as Official Sponsor, while Sungei Wang Plaza and Mega Star Arena come on board as the Official Award Venue Partners for the Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA), which will take place on 25 July 2026. To further strengthen audience accessibility, etix joins as Official Ticketing Support, while MAISEAT serves as the Official Ticketing Sponsor.

Beyond the screen, MIFFest 2026 will also present an immersive art and technology experience titled Algorithmic Organisms 2.0, introduced by Joanne Goh and presented by Jazzy Group with the support of the National Art Gallery Malaysia (Balai Seni Negara). Created by internationally acclaimed artist 0010x0010 (Ray Tijssen) and powered by Alien Illuminate and SQNXR’s concept and technology, the project will run from 4 to 19 July 2026 at The Grey Box, GMBB Kuala Lumpur.

Described as Malaysia’s first large-scale AI generative art experience, the exhibition explores the intersection of artificial intelligence, generative systems, sound, and spatial experience. Rather than a traditional exhibition, it invites audiences into an evolving audiovisual environment where digital lifeforms, moving images, and sound interact in real time. Reflecting this concept, the official poster itself takes the form of an algorithmic organism, a hybrid flower-bird entity generated through algorithmic processes that symbolises the convergence of nature, technology, and creative evolution. Ticketing will be available via multiple platforms including Klook Malaysia and Damai, with early bird and student access expected.

With a strong line-up of international collaborations, regional initiatives, industry development programmes, and immersive audience experiences, MIFFest 2026 is shaping up to be another exciting chapter for Malaysia’s film scene. Taking place from 18 to 25 July 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, the 9th Malaysia International Film Festival invites filmmakers, film lovers, and industry players to come together for an eight-day celebration of cinema, culture, and connection.

As stories continue to echo beyond the screen, MIFFest 2026 stands as a reminder of cinema’s power to inspire reflection, spark dialogue, and carry voices across borders and generations.

作为合作的一部分,AWFF 将设立特别单元 “Focus on ASEAN Countries, Presented by MIFFest”。
