[Press Conference Coverage] Kong Tao Cast Gather in Kuala Lumpur for Press Conference Ahead of Nationwide Release on 19 March 2026
Kuala Lumpur, March 2026 — The Malaysia-Thailand cross-border horror film Kong Tao, which is set for nationwide release on 19 March 2026, held its official media screening and press conference today at TGV Cinema, Sunway Pyramid.
The event brought together the film’s international cast and filmmakers, including Thai actress Kao Supassara Thanachat, Hong Kong actor Philip Keung, Malaysian actors Bront Palarae, Yumi Wong and Eric Lay, as well as Singaporean actor Glenn Yong and Mayiduo. Directors Peiji Goh and Yong Choon Lin were also present to share insights into the making of the film.
During the press conference, the cast spoke candidly about their filming experiences, the challenges of portraying intense characters, and the unique dynamics of working on a regional co-production that bridges Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Cast Share Personal and Memorable Filming Experiences
Eric Lay revealed that the character he plays reflects “about 50%” of his real-life personality. Fresh from gaining even more public attention following his brother Klayheng’s recent viral Chinese New Year video, Eric explained that the moments featuring him in those videos were not scripted at all, but are very much in line with how he is in real life. Speaking about filming challenges, he shared that one of the more difficult scenes involved a semi-nude sequence in which he had to repeatedly adjust his body positioning during the shoot. He also recounted an eerie experience while filming in a cave, saying that he heard whispers during the scene. However, he only informed the crew after the shoot had wrapped, as he did not want to alarm everyone and disrupt production.
Glenn Yong shared that Kong Tao marks his first time acting in a horror film. In a light-hearted moment, he joked that he would not volunteer to star in another horror movie unless this one performs well at the box office. Glenn also recalled a strange incident during filming, where the camera he was holding repeatedly shut down whenever he panned it toward Fon in a temple scene.
Bront Palarae said he personally did not encounter any bizarre incidents on set, though he enjoyed listening to the supernatural stories shared by other cast members. He added that he was happy to take on a role with deep knowledge of Kong Tao and found the film’s attention to cultural and spiritual details especially fascinating.
Yumi Wong spoke about one of her most challenging scenes, which required her to physically hold worms during filming. The emcee also hinted during the press conference that Kong Tao may be Yumi Wong’s final on-screen film appearance for now, as she is taking a step back from acting to focus more on behind-the-scenes work and production. Currently leading a team of talents, Yumi shared her wish to dedicate more time to the production side of filmmaking, making this a particularly meaningful release for audiences hoping to catch her on screen.
Mayiduo shared that he was essentially asked to play a YouTuber — something close to his real-life personality — and said he felt fortunate that the directors gave him the opportunity to portray such a role. He also revealed that for one particular scene, he had to bite on a sponge to create the effect of swollen teeth, which left him unable to eat on that side of his mouth for the rest of the night.
Philip Keung noted that Kong Tao has often been referenced in Hong Kong films and culture, but being able to explore the subject in greater depth through this project made it a valuable and memorable experience for him. He added that one of the biggest challenges during filming was having to deliver lines in both Thai and Mandarin. Philip also previously revealed that he took the initiative to learn basic Thai for authenticity in his role as an apprentice to a black magic practitioner.
Kao Supassara Thanachat shared that one of her main challenges in the film was having to speak English throughout much of the production, as her English was not as strong during filming. At the same time, she expressed her gratitude for being able to participate in an international collaboration for the first time. Fresh off her arrival in Kuala Lumpur, Kao greeted the media in fluent English and reflected warmly on her experience working with the Malaysian team, especially in her scenes opposite Bront Palarae.
Directors Hope to Balance Horror with Cultural Insight
Directors Peiji Goh and Yong Choon Lin elaborated on the film’s creative origins, highlighting the extensive research carried out into regional folklore, beliefs and supernatural traditions. They shared their hope that Kong Tao will not only deliver solid horror entertainment, but also offer an educational angle by introducing audiences to the cultural background and beliefs surrounding Kong Tao.
A Horror Mystery Rooted in Folklore
Kong Tao revolves around a mysterious case involving a group of students allegedly falling victim to black magic. Thai journalist Fon sets out to investigate the long-forgotten incident and encounters four YouTubers — Chenxin, Wei Kang, Potato and Weien — who had previously travelled to Thailand in search of supernatural thrills.
Upon returning home, they begin experiencing disturbing paranormal phenomena, culminating in the mysterious death of Wei Kang. Suspecting that they have been cursed, Fon seeks help from a white magic practitioner to lift the spell, gradually uncovering a dark truth hidden beneath layers of fear and guilt.
The film stars Philip Keung, Kao Supassara Thanachat, Bront Palarae, Yumi Wong and Glenn Yong, alongside Eric Lay, Mayiduo, Freddie Wong, Dato’ Chiah Chye Kee, Tony Eusoff and others.
Kong Tao is presented by Mega Films Distribution, with production by Distinct Entertainment, de Kangaroo Pictures, Amphibia Films, King Kong Media Production, Clover Films, Think Media and Sing Lian Ping. The film is supported by Malaysia’s Ministry of Communications and FINAS, and distributed by Mega Films Distribution, with Infinity Picture and de Kangaroo Pictures serving as production partners.
Kong Tao opens in cinemas nationwide on 19 March 2026.
