[Movie Review] Kong Tao
“Kong Tao” is a refreshing take on Southeast Asian supernatural folklore, blending traditional beliefs with contemporary storytelling in a uniquely regional production.
A Detailed Exploration of Kong Tao Culture
One of the film’s strongest aspects lies in its detailed portrayal of “Kong Tao” — a concept often referenced but rarely explored in depth on screen. As shared during the press conference by directors Peiji Goh and Yong Choon Lin, the film is backed by extensive research into regional folklore, and this effort is clearly reflected throughout the narrative.
Rather than relying purely on jump scares, Kong Tao builds its horror through atmosphere and cultural context. While there are several frightening moments, the overall level of horror remains accessible, making it suitable even for newcomers to the genre.
Bridging Tradition with Modern Storytelling
What makes Kong Tao particularly engaging is how it integrates traditional black magic beliefs into a modern setting. The story cleverly demonstrates how such ancient practices could still exist and assimilate into today’s digital and social media-driven world.
The pacing of the film is also commendable, maintaining a steady flow that keeps audiences engaged throughout the show.
A Truly Asian Collaboration on Screen
Another standout element is the multicultural dynamic among the cast. Featuring talents from Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Singapore, the film naturally incorporates multiple languages including Mandarin, Thai, English, and Malay.
This multilingual interaction not only adds authenticity but also reinforces Kong Tao as a truly Asian production — something that was also highlighted during the press conference, where cast members shared their experiences working across cultures.
Strong Performances Across the Board
Philip Keung delivers a particularly memorable performance as a mysterious Kong Tao master. His portrayal carries an eerie presence throughout the film, and his effort to handle both Thai and Mandarin dialogue adds further depth to the role.
Kao Supassara Thanachat is pleasant and captivating on screen, bringing charm and determination to her role as a daring journalist who is constantly seeking the truth.
Bront Palarae gives a convincing performance as a character with deep knowledge of Kong Tao, making his role feel grounded and believable within the film’s supernatural framework.
Meanwhile, Yumi Wong, Glenn Yong, Eric Lay, and Mayiduo leave their mark as a group of curious YouTubers, creating many memorable moments throughout the film. Eric Lay in particular stands out for his daring performance, especially in scenes that required him to be more physically exposed.
The film does have a few minor plot holes. One of the main issues is that the story does not fully explain the motivation behind the curse being placed on the whole group when it seems that only one of them was truly at fault.
The ending also appears to tease the possibility of a sequel, which may leave some viewers with lingering questions rather than a complete sense of closure.
Final Verdict
Overall, Kong Tao is a fresh and culturally rich horror film that offers an interesting new take on regional myth and belief systems. Its detailed world-building, modern cultural integration, and multilingual cast dynamic make it a worthwhile watch, especially for audiences looking for something a little different from conventional horror films.
Rating: 7/10

Bront Palarae
