[Food Travel] CHINATOWN 1974 Officially Opens in Petaling Street, Bringing Malaysian Heritage, Dining and Lifestyle Experiences Under One Roof

KUALA LUMPUR, 2026 — A new lifestyle and heritage destination has officially arrived in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s historic Petaling Street, as CHINATOWN 1974 celebrated its grand opening on 5 September 2026.

Located along Jalan Petaling, the eight-storey destination brings together Malaysian dining, boutique hospitality, wellness, rooftop experiences and cultural elements inspired by the character of Kuala Lumpur in the 1970s.

Built around the philosophy “MOVING THROUGH TIME,” CHINATOWN 1974 does not simply recreate the past. Instead, it draws inspiration from the street life, multicultural communities, family businesses and everyday traditions that shaped Petaling Street during the era, while presenting them through contemporary dining, hospitality and lifestyle experiences.

A New Chapter for Petaling Street

The official launch was led by YBhg. Datuk Wira Brian Chow, Chairman of Chinatown 1974 and Founder of iME Entertainment Group Asia.

Among the distinguished guests present were YB Datuk Seri Johari bin Abdul Ghani, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry and Member of Parliament for Titiwangsa; Y.A.M. Tengku Datin Paduka Setia Zatashah binti Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah; Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Mohd Annuar Zaini, Chairman of UDA Holdings Berhad; YB Mr. Samuel Lee, Deputy Director-General (Promotion II) of Tourism Malaysia; and YBhg. Dato’ Seri Saiful Nizam bin Mohd. Yusoff, Managing Director of Menara Rezeki Sdn. Bhd., accompanied by his wife, Datin Seri Dato’ Nurulhidayah.

A traditional lion dance performance marked the official opening, symbolically ushering in an auspicious new chapter for the destination.

Situated within one of Kuala Lumpur’s most recognisable heritage districts, CHINATOWN 1974 also enjoys a striking contrast between old and new Kuala Lumpur, with Menara Merdeka Maybank forming an impressive backdrop that can be viewed from selected areas of the property.

Three Dining Concepts, Three Different Experiences

Food plays a major role in the CHINATOWN 1974 journey, with three distinctive dining concepts occupying its first three levels.

On the Ground Floor and Mezzanine, HUAT n CO. 發達茶室 introduces a modern interpretation of a 1970s Malaysian Muhibbah kopitiam under the concept “Eat Like a Local.”

The menu features familiar Malaysian favourites including HUAT n CO. Signature Nasi Lemak, HUAT Roti Tissue with Three Signature Dips, Old-School Hainanese Chicken Chop, Malacca Chicken Rice Balls and Heritage Nyonya Laksa.

With space for up to 138 guests, the restaurant combines the nostalgic warmth of a traditional Malaysian kopitiam with a younger and more contemporary presentation.

Moving up to the First Floor, THIRTY-ONE MANSION 叁壹公館 takes inspiration from a 1970s Nanyang dim sum and tea house.

Traditional Cantonese dim sum is given a Malaysian twist through ingredients and flavours such as pandan, satay, curry and Nyonya spices. Highlights include Butterfly Pea Satay Glutinous Rice, Pandan Salted Egg Lava Bao and Pandan Musang King Durian Pancake.

Guests can also experience its Gongfu Tea ritual, adding another cultural dimension to the dining experience.

On the Second Floor, XI JU CHARCOAL HOTPOT 禧聚樓 centres around the concept of Charcoal Fire × Hotpot × Gathering.

Its signature offerings include Teochew Style Fish Soup Charcoal Hotpot, prepared with fresh tiger grouper, and Malacca Satay Celup Charcoal Hotpot, which brings Southeast Asian satay flavours into a traditional Chinese hotpot experience.

The restaurant also features live seafood, private VIP rooms and outdoor balcony seating overlooking Menara Merdeka Maybank.

CHINATOWN 1974 is working towards Halal certification for its F&B operations as part of its commitment to creating a Muslim-friendly and inclusive dining destination.

Rooftop Views from Daylight to Moonlight

At the top of the building, TWILIGHT TERRACE offers a relaxed rooftop destination featuring specialty tea, coffee and kombucha.

One of its biggest attractions is the close-up view of Menara Merdeka Maybank, complemented by views of KL Tower and the surrounding Kuala Lumpur skyline.

Designed to transition naturally from daytime relaxation to evening gatherings, the rooftop provides guests with a space to enjoy drinks while watching the city change from daylight to sunset and eventually into the night.

Wellness and a Boutique Stay Inspired by the 1970s

The lifestyle experience continues on the Third Floor with YANG HE Wellness Pavilion, built around the concept of Wellness × Restoration × Slow Living.

Featuring foot massage and spa facilities, the space encourages visitors to slow down and take a moment away from the pace of the city.

Meanwhile, Levels Five, Six and Seven are home to THE SEVEN STARS HOTEL 七星酒店, a 32-room luxury boutique hotel inspired by the charm of 1970s travel.

The rooms combine nostalgic design elements with contemporary comfort, featuring timber tones, deep greens, herringbone flooring, ambient lighting and period-inspired details.

Guests can choose from Standard Rooms, Deluxe Rooms, Premier Rooms and Couple Suites, offering visitors the opportunity not only to explore Petaling Street, but to stay within a heritage-inspired interpretation of its story.

Durian, Shaved Ice and Malaysian Flavours

The experience begins even before visitors make their way upstairs. At the entrance, Durian Village 榴蓮村庄 celebrates Malaysia’s King of Fruits through a farm-to-plate concept, presenting durian not simply as food, but as a Malaysian social experience often shared among family and friends.

Also located on the Ground Floor is AISICE, a modern Malaysian shaved-ice brand presented through a mobile truck concept.

Its youthful approach provides a playful contrast to the surrounding heritage-inspired environment and reflects CHINATOWN 1974’s broader idea of taking familiar Malaysian experiences and bringing them forward for a new generation.

Walking Through Time

One of the most visually distinctive elements of CHINATOWN 1974 is its art mural staircase.

Designed as a journey through Malaysia’s heritage and changing eras, the staircase features scenes and cultural references spanning the periods before, during and after the 1970s.

As visitors move upwards, the visuals gradually transition towards the present, eventually leading them to the rooftop and the modern Kuala Lumpur skyline.

It brings the destination’s “MOVING THROUGH TIME” concept to life while also creating plenty of photo-worthy spots throughout the building.

From kopitiam favourites and Nanyang dim sum to charcoal hotpot, wellness, boutique accommodation and skyline views, CHINATOWN 1974 presents Petaling Street’s heritage through several different experiences within one vertical destination.

Rather than keeping heritage frozen in the past, the concept aims to allow visitors to experience, share and reinterpret it for a new generation.

With its combination of food, culture, hospitality and contemporary lifestyle elements, CHINATOWN 1974 adds another chapter to the continuing evolution of Petaling Street as one of Kuala Lumpur’s most distinctive cultural and tourism neighbourhoods.

Bhd. Dato’ Seri Saiful Nizam bin Mohd. Yusoff 与夫人 Datin Seri Dato’ Nurulhidayah

發達茶室,以 “Eat Like a Local” 为概念,打造现代版70年代马来西亚 Muhibbah Kopitiam。

HUAT n CO. Signature Nasi Lemak、HUAT Roti Tissue with Three Signature Dips、Old-School Hainanese Chicken Chop、Malacca Chicken Rice Balls 以及 Heritage Nyonya Laksa 等。

Pandan Musang King Durian Pancake

Malacca Satay Celup Charcoal Hotpot

TWILIGHT TERRACE

TWILIGHT TERRACE
