Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation Returned to Kuala Lumpur with Six Hong Kong Films at AURUM Theatre, The Exchange TRX

KUALA LUMPUR, 2026 — The Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation – Kuala Lumpur returned to Malaysia this year, bringing Hong Kong filmmakers, actors and movie lovers together at AURUM Theatre, The Exchange TRX.

Organised by the Asian Film Awards Academy, the 10-day programme officially opened on 21 August 2026 and featured six Hong Kong films spanning drama, romance, mystery, documentary and black comedy. The Kuala Lumpur edition ran from 21 to 30 August.

The programme was supported by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA), the Film Development Fund (FDF) and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Kuala Lumpur, in collaboration with Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) and distributor GSC Movies (GSCM).

Among the Hong Kong film talents who attended were Angela Yuen, Kevin Chu, Renci Yeung, Elaine Jin, as well as directors Keane Wong and Joey Wu. Executive producer Kathy Wong of Afterpiece also joined the opening-night activities.

Six Hong Kong Films Showcased in Kuala Lumpur

This edition of the Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation featured six films highlighting different sides of contemporary Hong Kong cinema.

The line-up consisted of opening film Afterpiece, coming-of-age drama Bird of Paradise, youth romance Wakesurf Lovers, mystery black comedy Unidentified Murder, documentary Palimpsest: The Story of a Name, and absurdist workplace comedy Dog Day Evening.

From romance and family stories to mystery, black humour and documentary storytelling, the selection offered Malaysian audiences a closer look at the variety of creative voices emerging from Hong Kong cinema.

Commissioner for Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency Drew Lai shared that the Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation had been held for five consecutive years and had gradually developed into an important Hong Kong film event in Malaysia and the ASEAN region.

She also highlighted the Hong Kong Government’s continued support for the local film industry through various Film Development Fund initiatives, while thanking Malaysian audiences, filmmakers and industry partners for their continued support.

Meanwhile, Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Kuala Lumpur Owin Fung noted that the gala was not only a platform for screening Hong Kong films, but also an opportunity for filmmakers, producers and creative talents from Hong Kong and Malaysia to exchange ideas and explore future collaborations.

Keane Wong Returned to Malaysia with Afterpiece

For director Keane Wong, bringing Afterpiece to Malaysia carried a particularly personal meaning.

Having grown up in Ipoh, the Malaysian-born filmmaker was pleased to present his work to audiences here. He also observed that more Hong Kong productions had been choosing Malaysia as a filming destination in recent years and expressed hope that he could eventually return to shoot one of his own projects in the country.

The occasion became even more meaningful when approximately 30 to 40 of Wong’s relatives and friends travelled from Ipoh specifically to attend the screening and show their support.

Wong was touched by their presence and also expressed hope that Afterpiece could eventually receive a proper theatrical release in Malaysia, allowing more local audiences to experience the film.

Afterpiece Opened the Kuala Lumpur Edition

Directed by Keane Wong, Afterpiece served as the opening film of the Kuala Lumpur edition.

The story centred on once-famous stage director Owen, whose career had stalled after a decade-long creative drought while his marriage was also beginning to fall apart.

Determined to regain his dignity, Owen decided to write and star in a new play. During auditions, he encountered Hanna, a newcomer whose unusual presence caught his attention.

As the production progressed, work pressure, complicated relationships and Owen’s increasingly unstable state of mind gradually blurred the line between performance and reality.

Angela Yuen, who portrayed Hanna, described the role as one of the more complex characters she had played, particularly because of the dramatic shift in the character as the story developed.

The film also contained several play-within-a-film sequences. Yuen and Stephen Fung spent considerable time rehearsing for the stage-performance elements before filming, working on their movement, voice and stage presence.

Wong revealed that he already had Yuen in mind while developing the role. While he was confident that she could capture Hanna’s natural qualities in the earlier part of the film, he was especially interested in showing audiences a very different side of the actress later in the story.

During the post-screening discussion, Yuen also shared that one of the lines that stayed with her most concerned the question of what was real and what was not — an idea closely tied to how the characters understood reality and pretence within the film.

Elaine Jin Encouraged the Younger Generation of Filmmakers

Veteran actress Elaine Jin returned to Malaysia after several years and shared her happiness at being able to meet both established and younger filmmakers during the programme.

She took the opportunity to encourage the younger generation of directors to continue working hard and pursuing their creative journeys.

Jin also thanked Malaysian audiences for their long-standing support for Hong Kong cinema and noted that the increasing number of Hong Kong productions filmed in Malaysia had helped bring filmmakers from both places closer together.

For Bird of Paradise, Jin attended the gala together with director Joey Wu, giving Malaysian audiences an opportunity to learn more about the film and its creative team.

Renci Yeung and Kevin Chu Reunited in Wakesurf Lovers

Renci Yeung had two films featured in the programme — Wakesurf Lovers and Unidentified Murder.

Speaking about Unidentified Murder, Yeung described it as an entertaining film that audiences could simply sit back and enjoy. Rather than carrying a particularly heavy message, she hoped viewers could enjoy its black-comedy approach and leave the cinema in a good mood.

For Wakesurf Lovers, Yeung underwent wakesurfing training and credited her co-stars Kevin Chu and Jeffrey Ngai for encouraging her through the physically demanding preparation.

She recalled that there were times when she considered giving up, but the support of her co-stars helped her continue the training process.

Kevin Chu also shared that he and Yeung entered the entertainment industry around the same period, which made their reunion in Wakesurf Lovers especially meaningful.

He described his character as noticeably different from many of the more serious roles he had previously played, giving him an opportunity to portray someone more outgoing and lively.

Chu also joked that he seemed to have developed a special connection with Malaysia that year, having visited the country for another production before returning for the Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation.

He expressed hope that Hong Kong cinema would continue reaching audiences in different parts of the world and that its creative spirit could be carried forward by a new generation of filmmakers.

Angela Yuen Highlighted the Cultural Connection of Hong Kong Cinema

Angela Yuen also reflected on a university sharing session held during her visit, where she communicated with students in Cantonese.

The experience reminded her that bringing Hong Kong films overseas was not simply about screening movies, but also about sharing Hong Kong’s language, culture and emotions with Chinese-speaking audiences in different parts of the world.

The Kuala Lumpur programme also included three university talks featuring Keane Wong, Joey Wu, Angela Yuen, Kevin Chu, Renci Yeung and Elaine Jin, allowing students to hear directly about their experiences in directing, acting and filmmaking.

Bringing Hong Kong Cinema Beyond the Cinema Screen

Beyond the film screenings and post-screening sharing sessions, the programme also featured a special exhibition titled “Prisms Pulse: Hong Kong Cinema in Full Colour.”

Inspired by the rich visual language of Hong Kong cinema, the exhibition brought together lighting installations, multimedia imagery and interactive experiences.

Drawing inspiration from Hong Kong’s dazzling city lights, urban rhythms and multicultural character, the six films were reinterpreted through thematic installations that combined film visuals, sound, multimedia and sensory elements.

The exhibition offered audiences another way to experience the characters, stories and aesthetics of the featured films beyond the cinema screen.

Through its screenings, filmmaker exchanges, university talks and exhibition, the Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation once again created a bridge between Hong Kong cinema and Malaysian audiences while encouraging further exchanges between creative communities from both places.

香港電影巡禮重返吉隆坡！王德健、袁澧林、朱鑑然、楊偲泳、金燕玲及胡翠兒齊聚 AURUM Theatre, The Exchange TRX

吉隆坡，2026年 —— 「香港電影巡禮——吉隆坡站」早前正式回歸馬來西亞，並於 AURUM Theatre, The Exchange TRX 舉行。

活動於 2026年8月21日正式揭幕，一連十天至8月30日，帶來六部題材及風格各異的香港電影，讓馬來西亞觀眾從不同角度感受當代香港電影的創作活力。

活動由 亞洲電影大獎學院（Asian Film Awards Academy） 主辦，並獲文創產業發展處（CCIDA）、電影發展基金（FDF）及香港駐吉隆坡經濟貿易辦事處支持，同時由 Golden Screen Cinemas（GSC） 及發行商 GSC Movies（GSCM） 協辦。

多位香港電影人亦親自來到吉隆坡與本地觀眾見面，包括 王德健（Keane Wong）、袁澧林（Angela Yuen）、朱鑑然（Kevin Chu）、楊偲泳（Renci Yeung）、金燕玲（Elaine Jin） 以及 胡翠兒（Joey Wu）。開幕電影《第四幕》的執行監製 黃家怡（Kathy Wong） 亦有出席開幕活動。

六部香港電影呈現當代港產片不同面貌

本屆香港電影巡禮共帶來六部作品，包括開幕電影《第四幕》（Afterpiece）、《媽樣年華》（Bird of Paradise）、《浪花男女》（Wakesurf Lovers）、《UFO離奇命案》（Unidentified Murder）、紀錄片《隱蹟之書：重寫自我》（Palimpsest: The Story of a Name），以及《一個部門的誕生》（Dog Day Evening）。

從愛情、家庭、成長故事，到懸疑、黑色幽默及紀錄片題材，六部作品分別展現香港電影創作者不同的觀察角度及創作聲音。

文創產業發展處專員 Drew Lai 分享，香港電影巡禮已連續舉辦五年，並逐漸成為香港電影在馬來西亞及東盟地區的重要交流平台之一。

她亦提到香港政府一直透過電影發展基金不同計劃支持本地電影業發展，同時感謝馬來西亞觀眾、香港電影工作者以及各合作單位多年來對香港電影的支持。

香港駐吉隆坡經濟貿易辦事處處長 Owin Fung 則指出，香港電影巡禮除了讓更多觀眾欣賞香港電影之外，亦為香港及馬來西亞兩地的導演、製作人與創意工作者提供交流及探索合作機會的平台。

怡保長大的王德健攜《第四幕》回到馬來西亞

對導演 王德健（Keane Wong） 而言，這次帶著《第四幕》回到馬來西亞別具意義。

曾在 怡保（Ipoh） 成長的他表示，能夠在馬來西亞與觀眾分享自己的作品令他感到十分榮幸。

近年亦有越來越多香港影視製作選擇到馬來西亞取景拍攝。身為在馬來西亞出生的電影人，王德健希望未來有機會將自己的電影項目帶回這裡拍攝，進一步促進香港與馬來西亞電影工作者之間的交流。

當晚更有約 30至40名王德健的親友從怡保特地前來，到場欣賞《第四幕》並為他打氣。

親友們的支持讓他深受感動，而他亦希望《第四幕》日後能夠正式在馬來西亞院線上映，讓更多本地觀眾欣賞這部作品。

《第四幕》為吉隆坡站揭開序幕

由王德健執導的 《第四幕》 獲選為本屆吉隆坡站開幕電影。

故事圍繞曾經風光一時的舞台劇導演 Owen 展開。經歷長達十年的創作低潮後，他的事業及婚姻同時陷入危機。

為了重新證明自己，他決定親自編寫並主演一部全新舞台劇。在試鏡過程中，他遇上新人 Hanna，並被她獨特的氣質吸引。

隨著製作逐漸推進，工作壓力、複雜的人際關係，以及 Owen 越來越混亂的狀態，亦逐漸令舞台與現實之間的界線變得模糊。

飾演 Hanna 的 袁澧林 表示，這是她入行以來其中一個較複雜的角色，尤其隨著故事推進，角色性格會出現相當明顯的轉變。

電影亦包含多場「戲中戲」舞台演出。袁澧林與 馮德倫（Stephen Fung） 在開拍前花了不少時間排練，從聲線、動作到舞台節奏等細節都需要重新掌握。

王德健亦透露，在創作 Hanna 這個角色時，心目中已經有袁澧林的人選。

他相信她能夠掌握角色前段較自然的一面，而真正令他感興趣的，則是讓觀眾在電影後段看到袁澧林過往較少展現的另一面。

映後交流期間，袁澧林亦分享，電影中關於「什麼是真、什麼是假」的一句對白讓她留下深刻印象，因為不同角色對「真實」及「假象」其實都有各自的理解。

金燕玲為新一代電影人加油

相隔多年再次來到馬來西亞的資深演員 金燕玲，也在活動期間與不同幕前幕後電影工作者交流。

她特別鼓勵這次認識的年輕導演繼續努力，在電影創作路上堅持下去。

金燕玲亦感謝馬來西亞觀眾多年來對香港電影的支持，並認為隨著越來越多香港影視作品來到馬來西亞拍攝，兩地電影人的距離也因此拉得更近。

這次她亦與 《媽樣年華》導演胡翠兒 一同來到吉隆坡，與當地觀眾交流。

楊偲泳與朱鑑然憑《浪花男女》再度合作

演員 楊偲泳 在本屆電影巡禮共有兩部作品亮相，分別為 《浪花男女》 及 《UFO離奇命案》。

談到《UFO離奇命案》時，她形容電影是一部能讓觀眾放鬆欣賞的作品，不需要抱著太沉重的心情觀看，希望大家可以在戲院內享受黑色喜劇帶來的娛樂感。

拍攝《浪花男女》期間，楊偲泳則需要接受水上滑浪相關訓練，而她亦感謝拍檔 朱鑑然 與 Jeffrey Ngai 在訓練期間一路陪伴及鼓勵她。

她坦言當中亦曾經有想要放棄的時候，但在拍檔的支持下最終堅持完成整個訓練過程。

朱鑑然亦分享，他與楊偲泳差不多在同一時期加入演藝圈，因此這次能夠在《浪花男女》再度合作，對他而言別具意義。

他過去出演的角色大多較為嚴肅，而今次角色則較為外向及活潑，亦讓這部作品成為其演藝生涯中較特別的一次演出。

朱鑑然亦笑言自己這一年似乎與馬來西亞特別有緣，較早前已曾因其他拍攝工作來到當地，之後再度回到吉隆坡參與香港電影巡禮。

他亦希望香港電影能夠繼續走到世界不同地方，並由新一代電影工作者將這份創作精神延續下去。

袁澧林：香港電影也承載著文化與情感

袁澧林亦分享了自己在馬來西亞參與大學交流活動的經驗。

當天她以廣東話與學生溝通，讓她意識到，電影人將香港電影帶到海外時，帶出去的不只是電影作品本身，也包括香港的語言、文化及情感。

對她而言，能夠跨越地域及語言，與不同地方的華語觀眾產生連結，也是香港電影其中一項獨特的魅力。

是次吉隆坡站亦安排了三場大學交流活動，王德健、胡翠兒、袁澧林、朱鑑然、楊偲泳及金燕玲均有走入校園，與學生分享導演、演戲及電影製作方面的經驗。

讓香港電影走出銀幕

除了電影放映及映後交流，本屆活動亦帶來特別展覽 “Prisms Pulse: Hong Kong Cinema in Full Colour”。

展覽以香港電影豐富且不斷變化的視覺語言為靈感，結合燈光裝置、多媒體影像及互動體驗，讓觀眾從銀幕以外的角度感受香港電影。

設計靈感來自香港璀璨的城市燈光、都市節奏及多元文化特色，而本次放映的六部電影亦被重新轉化成不同主題的藝術裝置。

透過電影畫面、多媒體影像、聲音、互動設計及感官元素，電影中的人物、故事及視覺意象得以延伸至展覽空間，讓觀眾以另一種方式走進香港電影的世界。

透過電影放映、映後交流、大學分享及特別展覽，「香港電影巡禮——吉隆坡站」再次拉近香港電影與馬來西亞觀眾之間的距離，同時亦為兩地電影及創意工作者創造更多交流與合作的可能。
