Hong Kong cinema is making its way back to Kuala Lumpur this August!

The Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation – Kuala Lumpur 2026 will take place from 21 August to 30 August 2026 at AURUM Theatre, The Exchange TRX, bringing Malaysian moviegoers a specially curated selection of six Hong Kong films alongside filmmaker sharing sessions, university film talks and an immersive sensory exhibition.

Organised by the Asian Film Awards Academy (AFAA), the programme is supported by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau’s Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA), the Film Development Fund (FDF) and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Kuala Lumpur, in collaboration with Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) and GSC Movies (GSCM).

More than simply a film showcase, this year’s Kuala Lumpur edition aims to bring audiences closer to the people and creative ideas behind contemporary Hong Kong cinema while further strengthening cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and Malaysia.

Six Hong Kong films arriving in Kuala Lumpur

The 2026 programme features six films spanning drama, romance, mystery, documentary and black comedy, highlighting the variety of stories and filmmaking voices emerging from Hong Kong.

The selected films are:

- Afterpiece – Opening Film

- Bird of Paradise – Coming-of-age drama

- Wakesurf LOVERS – Youth romance

- Unidentified Murder – Mystery black comedy

- Palimpsest: The Story of a Name – Documentary

- Dog Day Evening – Absurdist workplace comedy

Through six very different stories and genres, the programme offers Malaysian audiences an opportunity to discover different sides of contemporary Hong Kong filmmaking — from youthful relationships and personal journeys to unconventional humour and thought-provoking storytelling.

Hong Kong filmmakers to meet Malaysian audiences on 21 August

One of the highlights of the Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation will be the opportunity to meet several filmmakers and cast members in person.

A filmmaker exchange session will be held on 21 August 2026 at 7PM at AURUM Theatre, The Exchange TRX, with invited guests sharing more about their filmmaking experiences, characters and creative process.

Scheduled guests include:

- Keane T.K. WONG – Director of Afterpiece

- Angela YUEN – Actress from Afterpiece

- Renci YEUNG – Actress from Wakesurf LOVERS and Unidentified Murder

- Kevin CHU – Actor from Wakesurf LOVERS

- Elaine JIN – Actress from Bird of Paradise

- Joey WU – Director of Bird of Paradise

Through post-screening sharing sessions, audiences will be able to hear directly from the filmmakers about their creative vision, character development, on-set experiences and the stories behind their respective productions.

For movie lovers who have always wondered what happens behind the camera, this will certainly be one of the programme's most interesting experiences.

Hong Kong filmmakers head to TAR UMT for film talks

The programme will also extend beyond the cinema through a series of sharing sessions at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT).

The sessions will bring filmmakers and performers together with local students and faculty members to discuss their careers, creative processes and experiences in the Hong Kong film industry.

The initiative also hopes to encourage aspiring Malaysian filmmakers to explore opportunities in filmmaking and cross-cultural collaboration while building stronger connections between the next generation of film talents in Hong Kong and Malaysia.

Session 1: Origins of Creation and Director's Vision (12PM – 1PM)

Featuring: Keane T.K. WONG × Joey WU

The two emerging filmmakers will discuss their creative journeys and approaches to directing, as well as how Hong Kong cinema can continue evolving and connecting with international audiences.

Session 2: From Sports and Modelling to the Silver Screen

1PM – 2PM

Featuring: Angela YUEN × Renci YEUNG × Kevin CHU

The actors will discuss the process of taking a character from the written page to the screen, including preparation, character development, challenges encountered during filming and their respective journeys into acting.

Session 3: Elaine JIN – A Cross-Generational Conversation on Cinema

2PM – 3PM

Featuring: Elaine JIN × Joey WU

Veteran actress Elaine JIN will look back on her extensive journey in the performing arts and her experiences bringing different characters to life.

She will then be joined by new-generation female director Joey WU for a cross-generational conversation exploring filmmaking from two different perspectives and discussing how cinema can connect with audiences across cultures and geographical boundaries.

Step into Hong Kong cinema through “Prisms Pulse: Hong Kong Cinema in Full Colour”

Besides watching films on the big screen, visitors can experience Hong Kong cinema through another dimension with the limited sensory exhibition “Prisms Pulse: Hong Kong Cinema in Full Colour.”

Inspired by the colourful and constantly evolving visual language of Hong Kong cinema, the exhibition combines light installations, multimedia visuals, interactive elements, sound and sensory experiences.

Drawing inspiration from Hong Kong's glowing cityscape, fast-moving urban rhythm and multicultural identity, the exhibition uses light and colour as tools for storytelling and emotional expression.

Each of the six featured films will also be reimagined as an individual thematic installation.

By incorporating scenes, visual motifs, multimedia imagery, sound and even scent, the exhibition extends the cinematic experience beyond the screen and allows visitors to immerse themselves in different aspects of Hong Kong's urban culture and filmmaking aesthetics.

It should offer something a little different for both movie enthusiasts and visitors who enjoy interactive art experiences.

Strengthening the Hong Kong–Malaysia film connection

The Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation is one of the Asian Film Awards Academy's initiatives to promote Hong Kong cinema internationally through screenings, filmmaker exchanges and cultural programmes.

With the Kuala Lumpur edition combining movie screenings, conversations with filmmakers, campus activities and an immersive exhibition, the programme hopes to introduce more Malaysian audiences to the creativity and diversity of Hong Kong cinema.

At the same time, the initiative creates additional opportunities for film professionals and emerging talents from Hong Kong, Malaysia and the wider Asian region to meet, exchange ideas and potentially collaborate in the future.

（吉隆坡15日讯）香港电影迷注意！由亚洲电影大奖学院主办，文创产业发展处（CCIDA）、电影发展基金（FDF）及香港驻吉隆坡经济贸易办事处支持，Golden Screen Cinemas（GSC）及发行商 GSC Movies（GSCM）协办的《香港电影巡礼—吉隆坡站》，将于2026年8月21日至30日，在 AURUM Theatre, The Exchange TRX 隆重举行。

本届巡礼将精选6部近年备受瞩目的香港电影，并邀请多位香港电影人亲临吉隆坡，包括金燕玲、袁澧林、朱鉴然、杨偲泳等，与大马观众进行映后交流。

除了电影放映及映后分享，今年吉隆坡站亦将把活动延伸至校园，邀请香港电影人走进拉曼理工大学（TAR UMT），与本地师生分享创作历程、电影产业发展及演艺经验。

与此同时，大会亦将透过限定感官式电影展览及艺术装置，把银幕上的电影世界延伸至现实空间，让观众从视觉、声音及互动体验等多个层面，更全面地感受香港电影文化。

《香港电影巡礼》一直致力透过海外电影放映、电影人交流及文化推广活动，加深国际观众对香港电影的认识，并促进亚洲各地电影产业之间的合作与对话。

本届吉隆坡站精选六部香港作品，题材涵盖戏剧、女性成长、青春爱情、悬疑、纪录片及黑色幽默等不同类型，以多元视角呈现香港电影丰富的创作面貌与独特魅力。

- 女性成长电影《妈样年华》

- 青春爱情电影《浪花男女》

- 悬疑黑色喜剧《UFO离奇命案》

除了戏院放映外，本届活动亦将走进校园，于拉曼理工大学（Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology，TAR UMT）举办电影讲座。

香港电影人将与本地师生分享各自的创作经历、电影产业观察及演艺心得，也让年轻一代有机会更深入认识香港电影工业及幕前幕后的工作方式。

讲座（一）｜《创作起点与导演思维》

两位导演将从创作起点谈起，分享各自的导演思维、电影创作方式及制作经验，并探讨香港电影在当今环境下如何继续突破、寻找新的表达方向，并与更多国际观众建立联系。

讲座（二）｜《从运动赛场与模特儿到大银幕的演员之路》

时间：1PM – 2PM
分享嘉宾：袁澧林 × 杨偲泳 × 朱鉴然

三位演员将分享各自进入演艺行业的经历，并谈及如何把剧本中的角色转化为银幕上的真实人物。从角色准备、表演方式、拍摄挑战，到个人演艺发展，这场讲座将让参与者更直接了解演员在镜头背后的创作过程。

讲座（三）｜《金燕玲的光影人生与跨世代对话》

时间：2PM – 3PM
分享嘉宾：金燕玲 × 胡翠儿

资深演员金燕玲将分享自己多年来的光影人生，以及在不同作品中塑造角色、与观众产生情感连结的经验。

其后，她将与新生代导演胡翠儿展开跨世代对话，从不同年代、不同岗位及不同创作角度，交流彼此对于电影、表演及行业发展的观察。

“香港电影：光谱律动”限定展览同步登场

除电影放映及电影人交流外，活动现场亦将设有以**“香港电影：光谱律动”**为主题的限定展览。

展览以香港电影丰富多变的视觉语言为概念，结合灯光装置、多媒体影像及互动体验，带领观众从另一个角度探索香港电影的艺术魅力。

整个展览将从香港独有的城市灯光、都市节奏及多元文化特色中汲取灵感，并透过光影、色彩、声音及互动元素，把电影中的人物、故事及视觉意象延伸至现实空间。本届巡礼的六部放映电影亦将以不同形式融入展览，让观众不只能够“看”电影，还能透过更立体的感官体验，感受香港电影独特的城市美学与文化气息。

深化香港与马来西亚电影文化交流

《香港电影巡礼》是亚洲电影大奖学院推动香港电影走向国际的重要文化交流项目之一。

透过海外放映、电影人交流、校园活动及文化展览，计划希望让更多海外观众认识香港电影，同时为香港与亚洲其他地区的电影工作者创造更多交流与合作机会。

来到吉隆坡，本届活动从电影院进一步走进校园及展览空间，把香港电影从银幕延伸至更广泛的文化体验，也进一步拉近香港与马来西亚之间的电影交流。
