KUALA LUMPUR, 30 March 2026 – The press conference for 823 Hostage Crisis was held in conjunction with the film’s promotional event, where lead actress Tong Bing Yu, actor Sahronizam Noor, and producer-director Tony Leung came together to share more about the film’s emotional journey, production challenges, and the real-life inspiration behind the movie.

Inspired by the 2010 Manila hostage incident, 823 Hostage Crisis is a film rooted in a tragic real-life event that shocked the region. However, during the sharing session, producer-director Tony Leung emphasized that while the movie is based on the real incident, several parts of the story and some of its characters are fictionalized based on real experiences shared with the team. According to him, this creative decision was made carefully to avoid causing additional pain to the actual victims and families connected to the tragedy, while still preserving the emotional truth and impact of the story.

Tony Leung also shared that the real-life story of survivor Yee Xiao Ling left a very deep impression on him, and he believes her journey could be highly inspiring to audiences. One of the emotional highlights of the press conference came from Tong Bing Yu, who plays survivor Yee Xiao Ling in the film. She revealed that 823 Hostage Crisis marks her first film project after the pandemic. At that time, she was also going through a particularly difficult phase in life, as her sister had just suffered a stroke. On top of that, Tong herself was dealing with lymphadenitis, or inflammation of the lymph nodes, and was left with a visible scar at the affected area after treatment.

Because of these personal struggles, Tong admitted that she initially felt worried about returning to the screen again. However, after learning more about the movie and its script, she gradually braced herself to take part in the project. She shared that the role resonated with her deeply, not just because of the emotional demands of the character, but also because she herself was navigating a period of vulnerability and recovery.

Tong also shared that she met the real Yee Xiao Ling in person after filming, which allowed her to understand the survivor on a much deeper level.
