8th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) 2025 Kicks Off with Star-Studded Ceremony and a Touching Sabahan Tale!

Kuala Lumpur, 2025 - The 8th edition of the Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) officially began on 19th July 2025 with a glamorous and meaningful opening ceremony held at the Sunken Garden, Town Park, MyTOWN Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur. The event marked the start of a week-long celebration of international cinema, running until 27th July 2025, featuring over 65 films from 48 countries across 43 languages.

Gracing the red carpet were the festival’s ambassadors—renowned actor Bront Palarae, popular actress Siti Saleha, and singer-actress Daiyan Trisha—who warmly welcomed audiences, filmmakers, and international guests. Bront expressed pride in how the festival had grown into an international cultural platform, while Siti described MIFFest as a bridge uniting diverse stories, and Daiyan shared her excitement about cultural exchange through film. Celebrities such as Zizan Razak, Fabian Loo, Rachel Tan, and Sangeeta Krishnasamy were also spotted among the attendees, adding glitz to the night.

Themed “Infinity”, MIFFest 2025 celebrates the limitless potential of cinema to transcend borders, languages, and communities. Festival founder and president Joanne Goh delivered a heartfelt speech at the ceremony, reflecting on the power of film to inspire empathy and understanding across cultures. She praised the selection committees for curating an inclusive and compelling lineup.

Setting the tone for the festival, the opening film was Ninavau, directed by Sabah’s own Bebbra Mailin. The film tells the personal and emotional journey of a Kadazan woman returning to her hometown in Sabah for her sister’s wedding, while confronting her own internal struggles and identity. With its strong cultural roots and emotional storytelling, Ninavau was praised for giving voice to underrepresented narratives in Malaysian cinema. Joanne Goh noted that the story “speaks to humanity” and touches the hearts of all viewers.

MIFFest continues to shine as a celebration of stories that matter, and its opening ceremony this year reflected the diversity, warmth, and emotional power of Malaysian cinema.
