Post-Movie Interview: "I Want To Be Rich"

Kuala Lumpur, 2025 - The cast and production team of the Malaysian film I Want To Be Rich gathered for a post-screening interview, sharing their experiences, challenges, and excitement about bringing this inspiring story to life.

A Story Rooted in Real Life

Producer Tony Leung Hung-Wah revealed that the movie is inspired by a true story. The film follows the journey of Ah Wah, a young man from a poverty-stricken background who shoulders the responsibility of caring for his gambling-addicted parents and younger siblings. Despite the hardships, he remains resilient and determined to provide a better life for his family. The film aims to highlight perseverance, sacrifice, and the pursuit of success despite difficult circumstances.

Louis Cheung’s Malaysian Experience

Renowned Hong Kong actor Louis Cheung expressed his excitement about filming in Malaysia. He had always heard about the country’s rich culinary scene but had to maintain a strict diet for another film project during production. However, he shared his love for Bak Kut Teh and hoped to explore more local delicacies like pandan cake and fried chicken wings. Claiming he felt "almost like a local," he looked forward to discovering hidden culinary gems enjoyed by Malaysians instead of the common tourism spots.

Lessons and Challenges for Han Xiiao Aii

Actress Han Xiiao Aii shared her learning experiences from working alongside Louis Cheung. Watching the premiere helped her recognize areas for improvement, particularly in her emotional scenes where she habitually looked downward while crying. Additionally, since she is not a native Cantonese speaker, she had to put in significant effort to master her dialogues. She expressed gratitude to Louis for his patience and willingness to communicate with her in Mandarin during filming.

Tong Bing Yu and Her Role as ‘La Mei’

Tong Bing Yu praised the camaraderie on set, particularly how quickly Louis Cheung adapted to working with the team despite the short 12-day filming schedule. She enjoyed playing the feisty La Mei as she had to break many glass bottles. She humorously recalled the numerous takes required to get the scenes just right.

Ahya’s Early Film Career and Stephen Chow’s Influence

For Ahya, I Want To Be Rich marked one of his earliest acting roles. He credited Stephen Chow’s classic films for shaping his Cantonese-speaking abilities and viewed this project as a valuable stepping stone for his career. He and Tong Bing Yu also shared fond memories of bonding with veteran Hong Kong artists over a durian gathering organized by actor Law Kar Ying, emphasizing the strong chemistry among the cast.

The Challenge in the CNY Film Market

With multiple Chinese New Year films slated for release, the cast discussed whether they felt pressured. Ahya, who had unexpectedly landed a second film role in Money Game, said he wasn’t too concerned, as he saw acting as an opportunity to explore his passion rather than a stress-inducing competition. Meanwhile,

Tong Bing Yu, who had also been busy promoting OMG! Mom's Big News, reflected on the Malaysian film industry during the CNY season for audience turnout. She hoped more Malaysian films would be released throughout the year rather than crowding into the festive period.

Han Xiiao Aii, who had now starred in three CNY films throughout her career, hoped to break the perception that she was only suited for festive releases, expressing her eagerness to take on a variety of roles.

Louis Cheung Looks Forward to Future Malaysian Collaborations

Louis Cheung, meanwhile, embraced the competition between Hong Kong-style CNY films, including My Best Bet and I Want To Be Rich. He remarked that being part of the festive film lineup was an honor and a testament to the audience’s desire for joy and entertainment during the holidays. Louis Cheung stated that if given the opportunity, he would be happy to work on more Malaysian film again.

Film Overview: "I Want To Be Rich"

The film follows Ah Wah (Louis Cheung), the eldest son of a poor family, who works tirelessly to support his loved ones. Despite having little formal education and facing constant ridicule from those around him, he remains hardworking and compassionate. From working at a siu mei (roast meat) shop to selling pirated VCDs to pay off his father’s gambling debts, Ah Wah takes on various jobs to make ends meet. His life takes an emotional turn when he falls in love with Mei Fang Cao (Han Xiiao Aii), a foreign worker in Malaysia. Together, they endure many hardships, including family struggles, financial difficulties, and the pressures of loyalty and love. Eventually, Ah Wah finds success in the real estate industry, changing his destiny and proving that perseverance can lead to prosperity.

If you missed the premiere, don’t miss another chance to meet the lead actress Han Xiiao Aii, Tong Bing Yu, and Ahya. They will be meeting fans at Sunway Velocity Mall on Sunday, 9th February 2025 at 2 PM. In addition to sharing exciting experiences from the movie, they will also play games and give out prizes to the audience.

The film will be released nationwide on the ninth day of the Chinese New Year (6th February 2025)!

Mom's Big News)。
