'The Classics in Pops' with MPO at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas!
Kuala Lumpur, 2024 - On Saturday, 16th March 2024, at 8.30 p.m., the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will present a specially curated selection of successful classical-pop crossovers in a concert titled "The Classics In Pops" at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), KLCC.
Gerard Salonga, the MPO's Resident Conductor, will lead this concert, which will serve as an excellent introduction for those interested in this genre. Sit back and enjoy familiar compositions that have achieved classical pop status due to their uniqueness, such as Beethoven's Symphony No. 5; it begins strongly with four notes and rises to become a well-known motif in Western classical music and popular culture.
Delight your senses with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Overture to Marriage of Figaro; the music is upbeat and cheerful, and it is frequently performed on its own as part of concert repertoire. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Overture, on the other hand, depicts the impossible romantic pursuit of the two doomed lovers, which ends tragically.
Edvard Grieg's In The Hall Of The Mountain King From Peer Gynt Suite has cemented its status as a versatile piece that is very much alive and well in the modern era. It has been used for centuries, from the Inspector Gadget animated series to films like Corpse Bride and How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No.9, known as 'New World' due to its fusion of classical and modern music, is also on the programme. Not only does it have international appeal, but it also has musical longevity, which appeals to modern, younger listeners. The evening's programme will also include Igor Stravinsky's well-known ballet The Firebird.
Another popular method of crossover is through film, which Joe Hisaishi achieved with his highly acclaimed soundtrack to Miyazaki's beloved animation Spirited Away.
