THAITANIUM
Thaitanium
comprises of five proud sons of Siam with different backgrounds – Khanngeon “KHAN”
Nuanual, Prinya “WAY” Intachai, Naymyo “DAY” Thant, Jason “BIG CALO” Roth, and
Watana “DJAYBUDDAH” Watanachaiyot who are considered to be pioneers of
Thailand’s hip hop industry.
KHAN
and DAY are Thai nationals by birth, WAY, was born and raised in New York as
with DJAYBUDDAH, and the youngest member of the group, BIG CALO was raised in
Tampa, Florida.
KHAN
and DAY first forged their friendship as a DJ/MC duo hosting jump off house
parties in the San Francisco hip-hop scene, where the pair had both emigrated
as young teens to pursue their education and to realize their dream to become
musicians. While in Bangkok working on his solo album, KHAN made the
acquaintance of WAY, then a young upstart Thai-American artist. From this
meeting, the idea of a three-man, Thai hip hop group was born in Bangkok,
eventually moving to New York in 2000, where their varied regional influences
have since been heard in each album produced and released. In 2006, the
addition of BIG CALO, WAY’s childhood friend and aspiring rapper, and
DJAYBUDDAH, already a prominent DJ in New York City, were both added to the
group.
Since
then, Thaitanium and its parent label, Thaitanium Enertainment Inc., have produced
their first two albums, AA and Thai Riders, which
were exclusively self-promoted, launching them to the forefront of the Asia
music industry while gaining a huge following in Thailand and the rest of Asia.
Their follow up albums, P77 and RAS were
subsequently distributed by Sony BMG Music Entertainment, where RAS,
aka “Resisting Against Da System” attracted the interest of Grammy, a major
player in the domestic Thai entertainment.
For
the past 13 years, Thaitanium has been carving out a solid niche and reputation
as one of the biggest and most successful hip hop groups in Asia through their
unique blend of Thai and New York street sounds. The result has seen Thaitanium
perform across Thailand, Southeast Asia, Japan, Europe, Australia and America,
where they have been the opening acts for some of the world’s biggest hip hop
artists, such as Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Far East Movement, Nas, Sean Kingston, Flo
Rida and 50 Cent on his “Get Rich or Die Trying” world tour with Fort Minor.
2010
marked Thaitanium's 10-year anniversary and the release of a double album
"Still Resisting", where they worked for the first time with
international producers and artists such as the legendary producer DJ Clark
Kent and LiL Fame from rap group M.O.P. The individual members of Thaitanium
are simultaneously working on a variety of independent projects ranging from
clothing lines, acting, modeling, as well as publishing and film.
Their
last concert tour took place in four U.S. cities in 2013 and they most recently
performed at the Music Tornado Festival in Japan in March this year.
They
have received a number of accolades including the “Best Hip Hop Group” award at
the Independent Asian Music Awards (AVIMA) 2009 and “Best Group” award at
You2play Awards 2012. They were also nominated for “Favorite Artist Thailand”
at the MTV Asia Awards 2006.

Currently
an Arts
and Communications student at Monash University Malaysia in Bandar Sunway,
Aric Ting is also an active
social media junkie, who not only runs his own radio show on campus, YouTube
100 Malaysia, but has interned with Groupon Malaysia as its social media
representative early this year. In being picked for the US$10,000 gig,
Ting beat a talented pool of entries from across Southeast Asia including
Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore and emerged the top candidate
after a Google Hangout interview process with shortlisted potentials last week.
Ting
impressed MTV Asia with his creative and wacky social media
resume. His role commencement is on 7 August till 16 August. It
was an MTV covert operation as the MTV Asia team along with MTV VJ Alan Wong
took Ting by surprise, breaking the news to him at Monash Malaysia. Catch his
surprise in the short instavid by the MTV crew.
The MTV
World Stage Insider search targets music fans from Malaysia and around
Southeast Asia, who already have an active social presence (e.g. Facebook,
Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, Vine, blog). Tagged as not the usual
‘nine-to-five’ role, the hunt for MTV World Stage Insider kicked
off through MTV Asia’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts from 3 – 24 July.
Apart
from the attractive engagement fee, the MTV World Stage
Insider will get to:
- “Take over” MTV Asia social media channels – Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
- Have his blog reposted on the MTV World Stage Malaysia 2014’s official site on a dedicated page that also displays relevant content produced by him (if applicable)
- Have a ‘backstage pass’ to MTV World Stage Malaysia 2014
Connect the MTV Experience with
fans
- The option of a potential MTV
internship after the 10-day stint
- The name of MTV on their CV,
need we say more?
“I
cannot believe I am the MTV World Stage Insider! I’m a huge fan of MTV and all
things music… this is the opportunity of a lifetime! What an incredible honor
to represent fans to bring them the latest scoop through MTV’s social media
platforms! I promise to devote every ounce of my attention, energy and passion
to give fans the experience they want to see and hear at MTV World Stage
Malaysia 2014. ” said Aric Ting.
“It
is important to bring a different type of personality as the MTV World Stage
Insider, who can amplify the passion, connect and speak for the fans, and
represent us well across MTV’s social media channels. It is no easy task for a
10-day job and the candidate is expected to hit the ground running!” said Paras Sharma, Vice President of MTV &
Comedy Central Brands and Digital Media, Viacom International Media
Networks Asia. “There were more submissions and certainly more impressive
social resumes received this year! It was actually harder to select our
candidate this year. Aric stood out as he not only came with the social media
know-how, but he stands for many youths out there who are as passionate about
their music, unafraid to seek opportunities for themselves, and certainly comes
across inspiring. That’s the heart of MTV.”
